Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” is working

Mac’s “Get a Mac” campaign gave us Mac users a sense of superiority for a couple of years but Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” is actually starting to work. The average PC user is starting to no longer accept my jibes about their operating system and see my remarks as snobbery (how dare they!) as opposed to the truth.

The interesting thing about Microsoft’s campaign isn’t that it portrays PCs as cool, in my opinion, but rather as ‘normal’ with everyone, all sorts of people, using them. Whilst Mac’s campaign focuses on Mac’s being fun and creative.

Naturally, the advert has some problems. There seems to be lots of Windows users in Africa but I imagine Linux is much more affordable for them; shame Microsoft don’t support OLPC!

Your thoughts on the adverts?

  1. I think they did a really good job by showing real people using the computer. Men and women from different cultures and nations saying the same word does try to show that the PC is for a regular person, which is ofcourse the bulk of the market.

  3. Well it seems like an appeal to the common man will beat an appeal to the “cool guy” any day. Many IT pros will relate more to the PC guy in those mac commercials than to the Mac guy.

  4. Is this an article based on fact or feeling? If fact, it would be nice to cite something. If feeling, well good for you, but stop writing misleading headlines.

  5. I like the new windows tag line about ‘life without walls’.

I wonder if the windows keep breaking because there is nothing to hold them in place?

Someone who understands architecture could probably explain this better.

  6. I’ve personally liked the Microsoft campaign. It seems like the right “hey, hold on a minute” type of attitude.

However, I disagree with Bill. No one wants to be common; we all want to be cool. The trouble is agreeing to what cool is.

  9. I’ve been meaning to do a post on the MS campaign for a while now. Strangely enough I think it’s very clever and respect is due to MS. (Not something I say very often).
Apparently they had set up a video booth in the Bull Ring shopping centre in Birmingham (wonder if it was outside the Mac shop). I was ever so tempted to pop along and record my own little contribution.
Might have gone something like this:
“Hi, I’m a PC and I run bloody Linux!”
Tis somewhat annoying at times when everyone assumes PC=Windows.

  10. Political: Accept my apologies for doing the same. These days, Macs are also PCs :)

So “I’m a PC, I’m made by Apple and I run OS X” is accurate!
