As Ryan stated, nothing has changed and word of mouth is by far the best form of advertising.

I've just written an article on this due to a client of mine stating some profound results when using testimonials alongside his products. As Ryan stated, nothing has changed and word of mouth is by far the best form of advertising. As far as online goes, word of mouth can be met with a degree of uncertainty but reviews of products and services certainly swing my money their way, particularly when going on holiday or buying a luxury electronic item.

It's always existed I think - however the internet now is allowing companies to actively go about seeking WOM coverage for better or worse. Paid for WOM is of course unacceptable but to a certain extent, even with the internet, WOM is still fairly uncontrollable by companies looking to promote their brand. Its an exciting field no doubt but you do take a risk in alienating a customer if you try and force opinions on them.
