The power of word of mouth marketing

Misc. — Joe Anderson @ 10:09 pm Thursday 13 December 2007

I think one of the most powerful types of marketing has to be word of mouth. Whilst there are issues regarding the legality of paying people to give word of mouth marketing, free stuff’s a great tool!

When I received my LG Viewty, I’ve recommended it to several friends who I believe seriously valued my opinion. Also, as well as putting the review on my blog I put it on several review sites like DooYoo, Ciao and Epinions.com . Amazingly, the Ciao review alone has had over 1000 reads in less than a month!

Another example is that I’ve kindly been lent 2 Skypephones. My friends have seen these and they think they’re cool… one is now planning to get one over Christmas. If you’re interested in winning a Skypephone, visit this blog where the most creative entry wins! Deadlines is Monday 17th December.

Word of mouth marketing works but it’s wrong to get paid to do it (but free stuff’s always good!).

  1. It’s always existed I think - however the internet now is allowing companies to actively go about seeking WOM coverage for better or worse. Paid for WOM is of course unacceptable but to a certain extent, even with the internet, WOM is still fairly uncontrollable by companies looking to promote their brand. Its an exciting field no doubt but you do take a risk in alienating a customer if you try and force opinions on them.

  2. I’ve just written an article on this due to a client of mine stating some profound results when using testimonials alongside his products. As Ryan stated, nothing has changed and word of mouth is by far the best form of advertising. As far as online goes, word of mouth can be met with a degree of uncertainty but reviews of products and services certainly swing my money their way, particularly when going on holiday or buying a luxury electronic item.
