Productivity tip: Turn your networking off

Misc. — Joe Anderson @ 10:31 pm Thursday 6 December 2007

Have massive amounts of work due soon? Consider turning your networking off.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll go onto the Wikipedia or receive a thrilling email and be enthralled by something pretty off-topic for hours making your final product of a lower quality. There’s a simple solution: isolate your computer. Turn your network card off; this will prevent you from getting any emails, reading RSS feeds or looking on the Wikipedia about Filipino politics.

If you need to research, try using offline media (digital or paper-based). Only go online if you need to.

Do any of you have any other, obvious productivity tips?

  2. I do that sometimes when I’m working on a project. Just my VPN so I can’t communicate via Outlook etc. Can make a big positive difference.
Same with the phone. Silent ring is very useful.

  3. (off topic) – I’m getting some strange cookie handling errors from your site at the moment…I’m using standard Safari on Leopard with everything switched on, so not sure why your site is objecting…? Feel free to delete this comment BTW
