Web2icide

Internet — Joe Anderson @ 9:24 pm Sunday 23 September 2007

Only a brief article today.

Web2icide is when websites alienate their users and change their purpose so much that users are so confused they stop using the site.

Some classic start-ups who in my opinion have committed Web2icide are Technorati (they strayed too far from blog search) and Digg (too for from tech news, censorship). Do you care to add any more?

  1. Can I submit Google 6 months in advance? They have moved so far from quality SERP’s to Adsense revenue that I think they are killing themselves slowly, but surely.

  2. I think this is in danger of happening to Facebook and it’s happening fast. The rise of what seems like hundreds of thousands of Facebook applications will alienate most people who used the site before the applications came in. Hardly any of the applications actually make Facebook better and most pages are now swamped with confusing applications which do nothing for the user. I’d bet that the only functions most Facebook users use are the ones that were originally designed for connecting people - the wall, messaging, photo sharing and groups. Has anyone else found this to be the case?
