TechCrunch, VentureBeat, Rev2 and everyone who’s anyone is reporting the possible purchase of social ‘clipping’ site Clipmarks by Forbes. I’m a big fan of Clipmarks and have been using it even before it was cool to (I reviewed it first in February 2006).
Eric Goldstein of Clipmarks says that Forbes and Clipmarks have been meeting together but acquisition rumours are premature. Forbes has been showing Clipmarks support though by integrating it into their website and having their writers use the site. Eric says that Forbes and Clipmarks have mutual admiration and that hopefully they will announce their relationship in coming weeks.

It’ll be interesting to see how much Alexa top 500 Forbes are going to be likely to pay for the Alexa top 10k site. I just hope that if Forbes do purchase Clipmarks that they don’t use the same Web 1.0 approach to advertising they do on their own site (when you first visit their site you are redirected to an ad page and even when you go away from that their homepage has no fewer than ten adverts on!
I wish Eric the best of luck with any possible acquisition and I hope Clipmarks will continue to be similar to how it is today even post-purchase.

Thanks Joe! As always, i appreciate your supportive words about clipmarks. Don’t really have more to say than i’ve already said, but just wanted to personally/publicly thank you for the coverage you’ve always given us. Regarding Alexa, i wouldn’t place much emphasis on their rankings. I can tell you from our experience that there is almost no correlation between the ups and downs of our rankings there and our actual traffic growth. July was by far our best traffic month yet you would never know that by looking at Alexa. Someone definitely needs to come up with a better system.
