Languid: Put in some text, find out which language it is

Internet — Joe Anderson @ 8:09 pm Saturday 20 January 2007

Languid is a Perl-based tool which allows you to paste in some text into a box and it will then tell you which language it is in. Of course, not all languages are included however all major languages from Albanian to Welsh are supported.

The site could come in useful if you wish to use an automated translation tool but you don’t know if the source text is Spanish or Portuguese or if you don’t know your Klingon from your Kyrgyz. It could also help if you work in a directory such as QuackTrack.

The tool seems to be fairly accurate, however it requires at least 20 characters to be inputted. The tool seems to pretty accurate and even correctly identified Klingon!

Languid is also available as a free download, so you can run it on your server. The data it uses to identify the languages are also available freely. It is not clear if this freedom is purely in the context of gratis or gratis and libre.
