me.dium: Social surfing

Internet — Joe Anderson @ 3:31 pm Saturday 18 November 2006

me.dium screenshotme.dium is a Firefox extension, still in private beta, which is a bit similar to Swarm, as it visualises the websites different people are visiting. The difference between Swarm and me.dium is that it displays websites other people are viewing similar to the one you are viewing.

me.dium operates through a Mozilla Firefox extension (though an IE 7 plug-in is coming soon) which sends the websites you are viewing to me.dium and also displays the sites other users are viewing in a sidebar. This does have major privacy implications, however me.dium does try to address these by not sending https sites, providing a simple off button and also by simply sending an email all data about you can be removed. It would be nice to have a feature though to exclude certain domains from being shared.

It would be nice also to see this moving away from an extension and for you to be able to view what people are viewing through a web interface.

The extension allows you to add friends, and you can chat with them and also see what they are viewing. This is pretty cool, but it is also a little concerning (over privacy). Then again, this could prove useful for small businesses so people could collaboratively browse.

A slight bug I have found is that when another user is visiting a password protected page, password prompts come up on your computer.

I have invites, if anyone would like one please just comment.

  1. Hey Joe, I got an invite from Azhar. And, yes, swarmthe.com was the first thing I thought of too.

So far, it doesn’t do much for me yet and I already forget to turn it on all the time. I’m interested to see if this is viable and if it catches on.

It sure is exciting, though. It adds great interactivity to web / browser based chat and it could indeed do wonders for people who want to agree on a ’session’ of collaborative browsing.

Another neat step in the direction of the social web.
