The Web 2.0 Blogosphere

Internet — Joe Anderson @ 8:57 pm Sunday 1 October 2006

With the rise of Web 2.0, many blogs have started about Web 2.0. Though mine did not start as a blog primarily on Web 2.0, I have focused on that for many months.

BlogShares lists 83 blogs in the Web 2.0 industry. Some of these blogs are poorly categorised, I wouldn’t class dooce as a blog about Web 2.0, and I would easily have TechCrunch first in the industry.

There are quite a number of major blogs in the Web 2.0 blogosphere. The obvious ones being TechCrunch, Mashable, Read/WriteWeb, Micro Persuasion, Ajaxian, Scobleizer and possibly eHub and SolutionWatch (all of which, interestingly, are part of the Web 2.0 Workgroup, with the exception of Mashable).

I, personally, read blogs which review Web 2.0 websites much more than those which analyse it, as I use them for inspiration. Out of the blogs I’ve mentioned above, I subscribe to: TechCrunch, Mashable, Read/WriteWeb, Ajaxian, eHub and SolutionWatch.

The 9rules Web++ community contains 10 blogs, the Web 2.0 Workgroup has about 30. 9rules and the Web 2.0 Workgroup share some blogs (SolutionWatch and The Web 2.0 Show), however I’d expect many more 9rules blogs to be in the workgroup. I believe the Web++ community contains a number of other high quality blogs which would be fantastic additions to the Web 2.0 Workgroup, such as Postbubble and Mashable). I would expect 9rules and the Workgroup to share many more blogs, as both contain many high quality blogs.

I find Mashable’s exception remarkable. It is a very large blog, just look at these Alexa stats:

The graph also shows how big some Web 2.0 blogs are. Perhaps Webby’s World will one day be as big as Mashable, but I somehow doubt we will.

It is worth pointing out that TechCrunch, R/W Web and Mashable make extremely frequent posts, when I nor SolutionWatch do.

  1. You don’t read rev2? :-(

It’s part of the Web++ group as well at 9rules and unless I’ve misspelt it in places, it is about Web 2.0.

I’m friends with the people behind all the others too, though (Mashable, R/WW, SW, Postbubble) and they’re all fantastic people - not to mention fantastic blogs. Infact, I’ve even written for Mashable in the past.

The Web 2.0 Workgroup thing is a bit outdated. For a good list of Web 2.0 blogs, check this out (and I did make it into that one! ;-) )

  2. Oh, forgot to mention, with the exception of Postbubble, we share a lot of the sponsors as well.

  4. Web 2.0 blogging is very hard. Any tech blogging is very hard, sometimes even depressing. For Once And For All….hard to get readers (hey, hard to find good content too) I just lay back chill and rest on the somewhat success of my photoblog. Tech (and web 2.0) blogging is just too stressful to stay anywhere near the top.

All you people are too popular … yeesh. I need some of the cake of fame damn it lol : and don’t give me that patience thing again :D
