Google Mail UK vs Gmail US

Internet — Joe Anderson @ 8:14 pm Tuesday 2 May 2006

When you are often scrolling through Digg you read about a new feature. More than often though, this feature will only exist in the United States.

There are many major difference between Gmail US and Google Mail UK. For a start, the name. This is due to trademark reasons. All new UK Gmail accounts now end with @googlemail.com – which kinda sucks. Also, it doesn’t have Gmail in the logo, but Google Mail. I documented this further in October last year.

Another difference is the interface. Below are images of both the US and UK interface.

Below is the US interface:

Gmail US

Observe the Clip part. This allows you to grab news from various sources or RSS feeds. This isn’t available in the UK version which in many ways is a shame, but really I can’t quite imagine this 5replacing Bloglines! Still, it would be nice to grab some BBC headlines while reading email.

Also, see the Quick Contact part (which I’ve hidden) which is a Google Talk interface. Most people think this sucks, and would rather opt-in over opt-out. Anyway, the only reason this was launched was as Google Talk was a miserable failure. I tend to agree, as I don’t want IM windows to pop-up just as I’m checking my emails!

Now look at the UK interface:

Google Mail UK

I find it a lot cleaner, but I miss a lot of features like the clips, also I miss the vibrant colours.

Also, the advertising sidebars are slightly different. The US version links in with Google Maps, while the UK version does not.

Look:

I always find such bias interesting. The US always gets the best features. It is possible for a Brit to use the US version of Gmail by going into Settings and changing Google Mail display language to English (US). This changes the interface, but not your email.

Even in a Web 2.0 world, the US still win :( .

Digg this!

  1. The World is Flat! Don’t worry, it won’t take long to knock the US off its pedestal. Then I’ll be bemoaning what I can’t get ;)

  5. Actually,

There is a problem with the both..
The US version, Gmail, can now support the “easter egg” of Google TV, whereas the UK version won’t. Basically you need the logo GMAIL and the “M” turns into a tv after login many times.. See youtube on how to activate the beta version..

I have the UK version… Nightmare

  6. Maybe Britain should come up with its own Google. Then you guys can have all the fancy features first.

  10. It seems that you can use both email addresses: [name]@googlemail.com OR [name]@gmail.com
I am in Britain and opened an account with Gmail but then realised that my email address had ‘@googlemail.com’ which I don’t quite fancy (longer to spell, etc) but I then tried sending myself emails to ‘@gmail.com’ and it works, so I can give out that email address instead – am I missing something here? If so, I would appreciate if you could let me know before I start distributing the wrong email address :-(

  11. Hi all
I also have a googlemail.com adress and it is NOT the same as a gmail.com account, in fact if you send to gmail.com from another email it MAY and it MAY NOT drop into the email box, I have tried this many, many times and it is a very hit and miss affair.

  13. Apparently gmail and googlemail both work for the same account, you own both. I have tested it many times and both received email from anywhere.

  14. Just change the language to English(US). I’m in Germany and I get all the new features this way.
