Though status bar advertising has been touched upon (see this from 5 years ago!), I thought of another way to advertise.
Some of you may remember, when background images were more widespread. I then thought of this as a massive way to get a message into someone’s mind. When you look at a page, you very often remember the design, including the background. However, you don’t rememember what’s in a banner ad – just the fact there is one.
If you visit a website, and the background sticks out, but not intrusively it is surely more likely to go in your mind when you are remembering the website. At a later point, you may then look the site up remembering that at some point you had heard of the site/product, but not remembering where.
I have created a prototype which is under a fair copyright and is viewable here.

Really nice concept! Cheers!
good idea
I don’t see the background, is that a firefox issue?
I love it. Very nice!
I’ve seen ad like this on the website http://abv.bg few weeks ago – that was an advertisement of “Tullamore Dew”. It is really an interesting way to advertise.
Very cool, Joe!
Can you make the background clickable?
Hmmm… doubt it
