Download of the Day: FreeMind

Software — Joe Anderson @ 9:44 pm Saturday 1 April 2006

is an open-source mind mapper. It is similar, and often superior, to some commercial products such as .

For those of you who don’t know; mind mapping is a way to organise ideas, research and thoughts in a diagram. These diagrams have branches and sub-branches containing text, and sometimes images, running from a central point. This allows you to easily sort and visualise ideas & research; which improves the generation of new ideas and quickens research.

FreeMind allows you to add images, icons links and obviously text to your mind map. Also, the software can create password-protected mind maps. You can then export your mind map as a vector, PNG, PDF, OpenOffice file, HTML, XHTML or even a clickable version (see mine about blogging here). This allows you to share it, even with those who don’t use FreeMind. That is very flexible.

One thing I’d love to see is a website which allows the generation of mind maps in an Ajax environment. Mind maps seems very Web 2.0, they just need bringing towards it.

Digg this!

  3. [...] There are a few pieces of software but I suggest the use of the simplistic yet effective cross-platform, free (as in speech) FreeMind. FreeMind is great but there are issues with installing it under certain Linux distros. I reviewed it here. [...]
