Boxxet

(pronounced Box Set) is a site which allows you to have, guess, a set of boxes full of content in relation to a subject. These boxes include books, a forum, pictures, links as well as blog postings. It’s like Flickr, del.icio.us and Digg all meeting. Anyone, with an invite, can sumbit content to a specific boxxet. Invites aren’t easy to find though, but I do have one or two for commenters ;) .

There are at least 100 boxxets, each extremely specific. You have boxxets for doxens of popular TV shows, universities, major teams in the MLB, NHL and NBA, as well as such ones as Web 2.0 and Ajax. The latter two are, of course, my favourite. You can then add a Boxxet to your collection, which adds it to the first page you come to when you visit the site.

As I’ve said above, the first page you come to when you login is your collection of boxxets. The boxxets I have here are Web 2.0 and Ajax. The only way you can add boxxets to this page is through the search interface, I would like the ability to add them on the boxxet page and boxxet list. Update: The owner of Boxxet tells me you can add them on a boxxet page, it’s just subtle.

You can sumbit books, blog postings, bookmarks, RSS feeds, gear, photos, movies, bars, hotels and restaurants. I do find the latter 3 quite strange. One thing, which I find quite sad, is how the site doesn’t have any tagging. You can, however, comment or review any submission. Also, for blog postings you can click ‘like’ or ‘dislike’, fi you choose dislike you have to say why, and this effects a score. The site is not like Digg, where only highly rated posts get on the front page.

The site uses some Ajax, for things such as ‘like’ or ‘dislike’. However, the Ajax isn’t very noticable; but the well-designed and placed DHTML menus are.

Despite my criticism, Boxxet seems to be a unique site. Very unique. I really hope it grows.

  1. I don’t want to waste your invite (I’m a rather ignorant geek) and I’m not sure if I can use boxxet (very old computer, 300mhz 64MB RAM) at the moment, lots of the bells and whistles crash this thing), but I love learning new things and would love to find out if I can use boxxet… anyway, thanks for the info :)

  6. [...] It has had quite a bit of a redesign since we first reviewed last March, however the principle remains the same. Boxxet puts blogs, images, links, books, forums regarding one specific subject (such as a sports team or Web 2.0) in one place/box. For more information I suggest you turn back to our original review. [...]
