A free P2P client with LimeWire Pro’s features: FrostWire

Software — Joe Anderson @ 12:11 pm Friday 10 February 2006

FrostWireDue to a misunderstanding of mine, I made a post here originally claiming that LimeWire Pro was open-source and that one could legally download its binaries. I was wrong.

Instead, this post will now be about FrostWire which is a free Gnutella client very similar to LimeWire from a user-interface point-of-view but removes many of the limitations placed upon the free LimeWire, provides many Pro features and provides support for the BitTorrent network all free of charge and it’s open-source! To download this file-sharing program, FrostWire, click here!

FrostWire looks almost identical to LimeWire Pro from its appearance and is skinnable much like LimeWire. It is also programmed in Java which allows it to run on most major platforms - such as Windows, OS X and Linux!

FrostWire’s website often seems like it does not want to load so I suggest that you use CNET’s mirror (if you use Windows but this one for Linux users or this one for OS X ones).

FrostWire’s great and I just wish I listened to its fans in this article’s comments section earlier! My apologies to LimeWire’s developers for my earlier mistake!

Any questions, just email me: computerjoe [at] gmail [dot] com .

  1. Ohh… Thanks. I I was just using Limewire, wasn’t willing to pay for the Pro version. You just saved me $18.88 :D, not that I would have gone and bought it, but it’s the principal.

I fully agree that in order to keep up with modern times limewire seriously need to rethink it’s commercial strategy.

  6. Calling Java as a platform “generally buggy” is absolutely incorrect. The knock against Java is usually performance - but in recent years even that isn’t true.

If by buggy you mean “has memory leaks” you are wrong. That wont happen in Java. If you mean “crashes” - that has nothing to do with Java - and has everything to do with the programmer.

Calling Java “generally buggy” - and stating it as if it were a “commonly known” fact means one of two things.
1: You are an idiot and like to make up things as “facts.” or
2: Everyone you talk to is stupid, and tells you lies.

  7. Um, Limewire is licensed under the GPL. The GPL allows free redistribution of the program in *ANY* form, as long as you offer to distribute the source with it.

You may copy and distribute the Program (or a work based on it, under Section 2) in object code or executable form under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above provided that you also do one of the following:

    a) Accompany it with the complete corresponding machine-readable source code, which must be distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a medium customarily used for software interchange; or, ”

I don’t know where you all got the idea that compiled binaries have different terms.

    Comment by Xepo — 10 February 2006 @ 5:16 pm
  8. Xepo’s right. The GPL allows free redistribution of any form of the software, binary or source.

Also, just for reference, you can also download the free Limewire and use it to download a copy of the pro binary.

I suggest you fix your blog post, since you’re inducing software piracy, and that’s illegal, you could have your blog shut down for this.

If you have never heard of it, do a search for Limewire with Credence and download it from cornell.edu’s website.

We don’t compile this version ourselves nor modify/tamper it in any way.

I know Angel from LimeWire LLC’s dev team. I talk to him frequently. He is correct in what he said.

While it may be true that you can download it from the network, it does NOT give you, or anyone the right distribute it or dwnload it without the permission to do so. Software piracy is illegal in the same way that downloading copyright music is. You wouldnt want the RIAA to come after you, right? Then why would you want SIIA instead to come? Let me say that LimeWire LLC CAN distribute 2 different versions of the software under different licenses. They hold the originating license under which you are bound by. Azureus does the same thing. Except they dont sell a PRO version. They sell source code.

It is absolutely illegal, without the permission, to distribute or download the LimeWire PRO binaries that were created and produced by LimeWire LLC.

You may however create the binaries yourself from the GPL licensed sourcecode and distribute them as much as you want, legally (as-long as you do not violate any trademark laws. ;)).

Please respect Open Source software. LimeWire MUST bring in a revenue to pay for its development costs.

  26. All of you must be new to OSS. You can NOT release something under the GPL, then attempt to restrict how it’s used. As long as they give you credit for it, you are powerless. So unless he tries to change the name to “LemonWire” and tries to charge for it, it’s a dead issue.

What you can do is dual license it. Commercial license for the pro version, and release the same code under GPL. You can release the same code under 2 difference licenses - it’s completely legal. But since they declared it GPL on their own website, it’s a done deal.

That’s the whole point of the GPL people, you can do with it as you wish, as long as you credit the author.

Here’s the senario. I write a program, we’ll call it Foobar!

I release the sourcecode for foobar to the world under the GPL

At the same time or some later time, I go in and add more features, I can also release a Commercial version. Am I violating the GPL? No I am not. Why? I own the copyright to the software and I can license it under as many licenses as I want.

Want real world examples of this in action? MySQL and Asterisk come to mind easily. So since MySQL AB and Digium sell copies specific commercial licenses to THEIR software you think they are violating their own license? hah……

Thanks for remarking what a great piece of software we got. And of course we know you can get LimeWire PRO on the gnutella network, and in any other network… are you supposed to do it? of course not, that would be software piracy and we don’t support piracy of any kind.

Here’s my favorite example on this subject, It might be a little extreme, but it helps illustrate the purpose.

    Can you buy a car?
    Yes.
Can you drive it 60mph in an avenue and then run over 20 people waiting on a bus stop? Yes.
Can the car engineers avoid people from doing that? No.
Can laws enforce you not to do that? Maybe.
Would you kill 20 people with your car? I hope not.

    Why wouldn’t you do it?

If you don’t get it Another example that might be closer to this situation would be this…

Some guy on the street says:
“Hey, I robbed a jewelry, there’s about 10 million dollars worth of stolen gold on 320 Lexington on the 4th floor, just go in and get as much as you want!, it’s free! I stole it, I’ll save you thousands of dollars, you don’t have to buy jewelry for you loved one this valentine’s!”

Would you go and get the free stolen jewelry, and support the guy who’s inducing people to be part of the crime?

  50. “Software piracy is illegal in the same way that downloading copyright music is.” wait, this is too good. We are actually getting told not to steal by the creators of frostwire. I am being held down and choked by the irony here. There needs to be a note above the screen on every programmer and software engineers computer “IF YOU DO NOT WANT PEOPLE TO STEAL YOUR PROGRAMS, DO NOT CREATE ANY PROGRAMS!!!!!!”. For the first time in history the consumers of media have more power than the creators and distributors of media. I think the music industry made a grave error in charging 15 dollars for a CD when they could have charged a lot less and still made a profit, the high price of music drove a lot of users to p2p and once you have experienced free music you will never go back.

  61. Qoute: “We are actually getting told not to steal by the creators of frostwire. I am being held down and choked by the irony here.”

What irony? P2P applications are not meant to be used for piracy. It was intended to be used as a distribution medium for content providers. Anyone can become a content provider through the use of P2P. The intent was to give everyone the power to distribute content without having the drawback of large bandwidth requirments. We DO NOT induce or support users that download copyright material without the permission of the copyright holder/owner.

You basically just admitted to everyone that you download copyright material because of your lack of understanding dual licensing models. And on that note, FrostWire is only under one license - the GPL. We also do not sell the products we produce. So what is your argument? You violate the law when you download a program that you do not have permission to have in your possession. Then you further your statements by basically saying that P2P developers should not me suprised when their own software is pirated either on the network they manage or some other medium of distribution. LimeWire LLC nor The FrostWire Team induce these behaviors. Your behavior is upto you. You are right however when you state that we do not have the power to stop it. But does that make it right?

This proves how much you really know about P2P technology, its uses and its intent.

I will leave you with these last statements: Piracy is wrong. P2P was not intended for the distribution of pirated material. The choice IS yours. You have a conscience, make the right one.

  64. Ok I have been burned a few times because of the GPL and I was on the same side as Limewire is now. After learning a bit I have learned to avoid licensing anything that I do under any GPL type license because of it. You are stupid for licensing it under that and while I do have pitty on you for it because I was in the same boat I have to take the side of the masses here and say “tough shit!” your can’t restrict your program in any way while under the pure GPL license. Each other license has limitations that help the creators but the GPL has only 1. It allows you to retain credit and the name thats all. You can’t say jack to anyone that wants to do anything with either the compiled or source form of the program. That is the point of the GPL. The GPL is designed to SCREW the creator and give the user complete freedom. That is the true point. If you wanted something else you should have looked at one of the hundred other licenses on the Internet and picked one like Sun’s, Microsoft’s, QT’s, etc.

“We DO NOT induce or support users that download copyright material without the permission of the copyright holder/owner.”

Maybe p2p networks werent originally intended for sharing copyrighted materials, but that is their almost sole purpose now. You say you do not support piracy, but in fact you are one of the greatest supporters of piracy. You make the software that makes piracy possible. If you didnt support piracy you would stop distributing Limewire, because that is what Limewire is used for, piracy.

HMMMM… WELL… Cisco makes routers that are used in the whole chain of file sharing. Should Cisco stop producing internet routers to curve internet piracy? LimeWire might be used for piracy, but it doesn’t make it right. With your logic I can steal your identity and rob you of your life. Just because I can. I can go with more extreme cases aswell.

  90. Ok, now i’ve read some really interesting comments on here and i must admit i have learned a few things about the licensing act’s. Firstly it seems that most of the users using these p2p networks have no idea why they are here and their intentions, i wont leave quotes just read the articles, i myself being one of them, i have downloaded stuff from the net, be it illegal or not, under the pretense ‘if its there its yours’ but i understand where the developers come from, if your spending 12 hours a day, 6 days week working on free software you cant work, or are probably working unpaid, therefore you need money for your further developments. As i understand it the GPL license only gives the developers the right the own the name and get credit for it but no rights of ownership, where as there are plently of licenses that give full ownership but require more money to buy them. which i think is the issue. Finally i want to drop a bombshell that every one seems to be missing. I also understand it that the exchange of digital data cannot be illegal as this type of data, in effect, is just electrical pulses. How can you put a copyright on electricity?

  105. “HMMMM? WELL? Cisco makes routers that are used in the whole chain of file sharing. Should Cisco stop producing internet routers to curve internet piracy?”
No, I do not think that Cisco should stop making routers. Most routers are not used illegally. While over 90% of Limewire downloads are illegal. Also, if there were no routers it wouldnt “curve” piracy IT WOULD STOP IT.

  110. “No, I do not think that Cisco should stop making routers. Most routers are not used illegally. While over 90% of Limewire downloads are illegal. Also, if there were no routers it wouldnt ?curve? piracy IT WOULD STOP IT.”

Using LimeWire is not illegal either. It is just in the chain of filesharing just like Cisco routers are. LimeWire just allows a network-commons of people to collectively create a digital library. LimeWire has no control over what is being shared/stored on the network. The INTENT of Routers/Windows OS/Linux/Hubs/NICS/CAT5-6 etc were not to allow an easy way to transfer pirate materials. The same circumstance goes with limewire which was not INTENDED to allow an easy medium to transfer pirate materials. And the same principle can be applied to guns, knives, pencils, paper-clips, anything. Anything can be used in any such a way that it wasnt intended to be used. Oh, and piracy exists elsewhere besides the internet, so it would only curve piracy, not stop it.

My question to you was: Should Cisco stop producing internet routers to curve internet piracy? Your response should have been “Oh, I understand now. Because LimeWire just ALLOWS for the transfer to take place just like a cisco router does. Although the INTENDED purpose can be abused, it should be seen as a mere nuisance instead of a technological blunder (so now we put DRM in everything).”

  111. LimeWire is used for legal purposes too. In latter versions, you can see the use of Creative Commons searches. In all fairness, if I was going to download a Linux distro I would use BT, but not everyone would.

Ok, well do not get me wrong, I am not against internet piracy. I love internet piracy and I am downloading copyrighted files off of my illegally obtained copy of PRO as I type this. My gripe originally was that a person who works with Frostwire posted that we should not be stealing. This irked me because if you create a gnutella client, you are helping illegal filesharers. I do not for one second beleive that the creators of Limewire and Frostwire ever intended their products to be used solely for legal downloads. Especially Frostwire, it was created in response to the fact that limewire was going implement copyright filters into its client. Frostwire was created so that filesharers could continue sharing copyrighted works, so it makes no sense for someone working with Frostwire to tell people about the morals of filesharing. Also I am confused on your usage of the word “curve” how can you curve an intangible noun? Do you mean “curb” as in to reduce? When I said “piracy” I meant illegal filesharing, obviously there are other kinds of piracy, but that is the only one relevant to these boards and this discussion.
