I can do HTML, enough CSS, I can read PHP but can’t write it from scratch. What shall I do next?
I’m tempted to actually read my C# book, but at the moment I’m busy. I have things to write, software to test and, oh yes, a website to redesign.
I’ve never programmed before, so learning a language would be a big step – but one I will have to take. But what should I code in? Is C# a good first language? I think if you learn C# you can learn other C languages easily and J# easily (which in turn teaches you Java).
It would also be useful to script, in Python or Ruby, but that can wait for later!

From one British nerd to another I can fully recommend C# and .net as a great choice.
Lots of good jobs and doing C#.net is a far more rewarding (and easy) than php. Coding both .net and php on a day to basis I would say learn the former.. It does alot of the hard stuff for you!
Good luck

You could try starting in C or Java. I say C since it’s very old and stable (C# not so much) and there are lots of books on it. I say Java becuase it’s Object Oriented and it’s a easy language to learn. I know that a lot of Computer Science Departments start the first years off in Java.
But as the other poster said, C# seems to be getting used more and more.
Start with Java or C. Preferably Java. CS departments nowadays let you cut your teeth on OO development before you even learn that procedural exists. However, if you want to write real software that lets you have real control over what’s going on, there’s no replacement for C. Bite the bullet, learn C, and everything else will seem easy.
