More on Firefox 1.5 Beta

Mozilla — Joe Anderson @ 5:00 pm Friday 9 September 2005

In my earlier post I said I’d say more tomorrow, but you know what it’s like when you’ve only been out of bed for 30 minutes! Also, this post is about the Windows version.

I’m now covering a little more in depth now. Firstly, like all new Firefox builds many extensions do not work; well actually nearly none. The reason? I don’t think the engine has been re-written, just many extension are for versions 0.8 to 1.0.x and Deer Park (which is very similar, but is actually version 1.1 alpha, but it was such as change it was made version 1.5, though this isn’t reflected in the extensions),

Only one of my old extensions work, Platypus, which is of no use as it relies on Greasemonkey, which just happens not to work.

I expect major extensions like Google Toolbar (official), Greasemonkey, Google Suggest, Stumbleupon and All-in-one-Gestures to be updated soon. Some official extension built-in to Firefox 1.5, like Talkback don’t even work! Some extensions which work with 1.5 are Linkification, BBCodeXtra (though the file on Mozilla’s servers seems to be down, it is mirrored elsewhere), Chatzilla and ForecastFox.

I will miss Greasemonkey, though I expect it’s developers to be working 24/7 to get it working.

The most visible changes in Firefox 1.5 are a slightly changed default skin – which I don’t really like – Answers.com added to the search engine list and the Clean Pivate Data tool (aka. Sanitize). Also the options box takes a different layout. You can also reorder tabs  – and it has better SVG support.

These bullets are for you!

Computers, Hardware, Internet, Misc., Software — Joe Anderson @ 8:15 pm Thursday 8 September 2005
Okay, lots of things have happened recently, so I?m doing another bullet point post:

  • 5 has been released. It includes useless features like parental control for podcasting ? I?d like to see an 8 year old figuring out what podcasting is! It also allows searching. I still prefer Winamp, it is nicer, and has better plug-in management. It has a new interface, but many don?t like it. It also has better iPod for Windows tools. Neil Turner has reviewed it fully. I?m sticking with Winamp.
  • is also going to start making an , which is a mobile phone and a personal audio player (i.e. MP3 player). It can play randomly like a iPod Shuffle. It will be a venture between Apple and and .
  • Another Apple point now. Apple is going to launch a new, pencil-sized iPod, called . It is available with 2GB or 4GB, starting at $199 (?108).
  • Now, the last Apple point; Steve Jobs plans to crush all those who oppose him. Just kidding!
  • Macworld reports that eBay is in (or maybe) talks with Skype, over a buy-out worth US$2billion to US$3billion. Other potential buyers include M$, Yahoo! and News Corp.
  • The and M$ had talks; discussing various things. Many things happened, more details here.
  • GNOME, a popular desktop enviroment for Linux (used by Ubuntu amongst others) is now in version 2.12.

A lot of Apple today, must have been a PR day!

Making a simple Greasemonkey Script

Mozilla — Joe Anderson @ 5:23 pm Wednesday 7 September 2005

If you are a  user, or as some people on SFX say ‘Power User’ (advanced user), you might use .

Greasemonkey is an extension which customises the appearance of webpages, through certain specifics written in a user-script (a JS).

Writing scripts can be a chore though, especially if you have limited knowledge of JavaScript. I found an extension which speeds up the process, though it isn’t perfect. It is called .

It doesn’t add all the necessary fields: like the script description. This I think needs to be added manually.

Platypus is a little awkward to use, but is nice to use on simple jobs, like removing static text or changing it’s font. One nifty feat I’ve done so far is cleaning up . The script is available here. I also slightly modified JustAnswer.com, but I don’t think this is worth publishing.

I love Greasemonkey, and now I’m happy I can contribute to the community. I’m planning to launch my scripts on  .

You can view all my user-scripts at http://userscripts.org/people/698. This script needs Platypus.

The Future’s Dull Down Under

Internet, Misc., Software — Joe Anderson @ 8:54 am Tuesday 6 September 2005
An Australian federal judge ruled Kazaa illegal. Now, hardly anyone uses Kazaa any more, as the RIAA, BPI and other record industry associations targeted that network in particular; also, it contains malware.

Anyway, Judge Murray Wilcox decided did not do anything to try to rein in illegal activity, though they did post warnings, like most P2P networks.

The makers of Kazaa say it?s no different of someone copying a tape, or photocopying something illegal, and in those cases the manufacturer don?t get punished.

Kazaa needs to pay 90% of the money the record industries spent on the case ? and damages will be decided on a later date.

But that?s the beauty of the internet, it?s uncensored, if all P2P networks censored content, removing illegal content it wouldn?t be freedom.

The good thing is some networks cannot be brought down, like Gnutella, Bittorrent, Edonkey2000, Gnutella2 or Freenet as the have no owner.

I oppose any censorship of the internet used to combat piracy, but I am in favour of censorship to remove child porn and scams.

But like always, we don?t want to censor the net ? it would spoil what it stands for; freedom.
