The ‘Quicker’ Run Cheat

Computers — Joe Anderson @ 9:08 pm Sunday 7 August 2005

The Run DialogEver want to open a program but can’t be bothered to go through your start menu or minimize the 15 apps you have open to reach the desktop (yes I have this problem often)? Well I’ve sorta found a solution. It includes the adding of programs to the C:/Windows (taking C is the partition Windows is located on… blah…blah…blah…) directory.

I’ve created an archive of files which allow the quick launching of various apps (note the name I have in brackets next to it is what it needs to be called). It only works if the files have the default name in the default folder.

This cheat is not case-sensitive. You do not need all the programs installed for it to work, but you can’t open the ones you don’t have installed! This cheat does not include the programs, just shortcuts to them.

I have only added one Microsoft product as I don’t like Microsoft (but I still use Windows, lol!). If you want any other programs added simply tell me which ones.

This idea needs Windows (probably 95 or above, but not sure might be 3.1 or 98)

Okay, instructions:

1) Download this quickload.zip (11 KB).

2) Open the file and extract the contents to C:/Windows . Make sure it doesn’t go in a sub-folder

3) To run the shortcuts simply click Start>Run and then enter the programs shortcut (from above in the brackets).

4) It should run if the default install path is used and C:/ is the partition it lies on.

5) Find any errors or want any requests just comment.

To do it yourself:

1) Create a shortcut to the program you want to use

2) Rename it to what you want it to run as (so if you want AIM rename it to AIM)

3) Copy/move this shortcut to C:/Windows

4) Follow steps 3&4 from the above set of instruction

I hope you find this at least semi-useful.

  1. Quick launch apps from the Run box…

    Forget installing a launcher application – the built-in Run box in Windows can quickly launch applications. Create a shortcut in your Windows installation path, such as C:/Windows, and launch programs by typing in the name of the shortcut in……

  2. I use this trick all the time. It also has the bonus that the down arrow key will scroll through your past history of shortcut executions.

    WindowsKey+R DownArrowKey Enter -> Restarts shortcut before last.

  4. Launch Applications without the Programs Menu in Windows XP…

    I found this article from Webby’s World » The ‘Quicker’ Run Cheat via Lifehacker. Using the Win+R function is quite handy and I use it, but not in the way described in the article. I type the full path of a few programs that I use regularly…

  5. I often use these from the run box…

    winword = MS Word
    excel = MS Excel

    calc = calculator
    winmine= windows minefield game

    well… some of these I don’t use that much!

  6. You know, this is the nail in the coffin for the Start menu, right? Who needs it anymore? Press WindowsKey + R, type in a word, and away you go.

    Thanks for finding an underused feature that has been hiding under our noses for possibly a decade! I’ve added shortcuts for all the programs I use and I’m loving it.

  7. This remind’s me of a program I found once that would quick run a program. You hit a keyboard shortcut and typed the name of the program, then it found it as you typed. i.e. to fun Firefox, you type “fir” and by then its found the program, so you hit enter.

    I cant remember what its called though, ill get back to you if I find out

  10. All I have to say is that the Windows Run box is totally limited to what you can do. If you really want to take your command(s) running shortcuts to the next level I suggest you take a look at SlickRun. This nifty little program is 1000X stronger than windows run dialog (crap) box.

    Find slick run by …. duh google for it!

  11. I’ve been doing this for ages :)

    If you have administrator privs, you can also add to the PATH variable in MyComputer > Properties, to reach out to other directories from the commandline.
