Hobonation tries out Microsoft Vista!

Software — Joe Anderson @ 6:15 pm Friday 29 July 2005

Hobonation.com has written a review, complete with screenshots, on the new Windows operating system Vista.

Currently, I’m on vacation so I haven’t had a chance to try this myself, I do have a copy of Longhorn somewhere, but I won’t use it, I’ll try to fetch this from either IsoHunt or GNUtella. You can’t upgrade from XP, so I’ll have to find a decent bootloader (it needs to be simple, as some non-techies just want to use Windows XP, and it needs just to load XP by default after about 15 seconds); any suggestions (I’m also going to install Ubuntu, will GRUB do)?

Anyway, apparently the OS runs fine on a 512MB Athlon XP 2800+ without any major problems, so it should be fine on the Athlon 64 3400+ with 1.5GB of RAM.

The install process is apparently simple, with the only drawback being it took 45minutes to install! Screenshots of this, and everything else Vista, are located at Hoboimages. Another fault I coukd pick about the whole Vista experience is the fact that you have to use a silverish XPish interface, I have always being unkeen on these, and switched to a 2000 style layout the moment I got Windows XP!

As said, I don’t have this yet, so I can’t say to much about it, but looking at the screenshots Internet Explorer 7 is included, with tabbed browsing, however no changes have being made to the download manager (a shame)!

Anyway I will write more when I have this.

Why do pirates spend more on legal downloads than most people?

Misc. — Joe Anderson @ 11:40 pm Wednesday 27 July 2005

People who illegally share music files online are also big spenders on legal
music downloads, research suggests.

BBC News

Yes, the BBC suggests that people who illegally share music files pay an average of ?5.52 a month on legal digital music, while other music fans pay a monthly average of ?1.27.

Why? One theory I have is that my downloading legal music they are repenting their sins, and showing they are not bad people. I try to download 1 legal song a month, it makes me feel better and less of a pirate, giving something back to the industry. I don’t know if others feel the same way.

The study also shows that MP3 players are preferred to MP3 phones (ditto).

Windows Longhorn to be called Windows Vista

Software — Joe Anderson @ 12:46 pm Sunday 24 July 2005

Sorry for the lack of updates everybody, I am currently not able to access the Internet easily.

Longhorn logoMicrosoft announced that the next verson of Windows, previously codenamed Longhorn, will be called WindowsVista. This is following the Microoft trend giving everything a nice name, like Windows XP instead of Windows Insecure.

This new version of Windows is supposed to be secure (I give it 24hrs before it’s proven otherwise) and it only runs on high-spec computers, which I believe will result in lower sales than Windows XP. Vista is scheduled for release in late 2006. This will be the longest ever gap between Windows OS, 5 years. I remember in early 2001 using Windows XP for the first ever time, it looked awful!

Join the Borg

Misc. — Joe Anderson @ 5:09 pm Tuesday 19 July 2005

I was reading Captain Picard’s Journal, a great blog, and found this recruitment letter from the Borg Queen herself.

I know technically this isn’t technology related but it’s sort of a PSA (but isn’t) , but I’ll post it anyway.

 The Queen Wants YouHello,

I’m sorry to interrupt your usual reading, but we have installed this special recruiting message in all journals.

Have you ever thought of joining the Borg?

Yes, I know we’ve had a bad press, and our invasion of Earth and the battle of Wolf 359 was rather hasty.

We’re just asking for a chance to put our past problems behind us, wipe the slate clean and start again.

Here are all the wonderful advantages you will receive as a new drone on a Borg Cube.

FREE cybernetic implants!

FREE assimilation!

Your own customised choice of designation within a specified group. If you want to be Sixteen Of 25, it’s yours!

You have the chance to fly in an advanced state-of-the-art Borg Cube with transwarp technology. Far superior than anything else around today.

If you are a member of a race we haven’t assimilated before, then you get extra-special VIP treatment. You will be looked after especially by myself, so we can ‘get to know you’.

If you are on your own, think of all the friends you’ll be making! Millions of voices all in the Collective waiting to meet you and be part of them. Where else can you get such universal friendship?

There have been a few troublemakers around; we need your help to get them out of the way so we can enjoy Borg dominat…I mean harmony. Species 8472 will not be friends with us.

Can you help us wipe them out?

Don’t dismiss this lightly. Think about it. Talk to your family and ask them to come along. We do a special ‘family assimilation’ session. Lots of fun for all!

Thank you for your time and patience; if after this, you’re still not quite sure, just remember the company motto.

Resistance Is Futile.

Now returning to normal programming I’m happy to announce I’m going on holiday, I’ll try to keep my blog up though!

No UK Equivalent to Microsoft

Misc. — Joe Anderson @ 7:12 pm Sunday 17 July 2005

To build on this and create a British equivalent of tech giants such as Microsoft, co-operation and communication between all those involved in the UK’s hi-tech sector - government, researchers, businesses and financiers - was key.

BBC News

British BillBasically, the BBC said how a report said our hi-tech culture and economy should be better, with more Brits in the industry and better co-operation between financiers, academics, technologists and the government would improve our high-tech life. I didn?t care about the report myself, as I see no problem working with Americans but the above quote did offend me.

Why? Do we want a British equivalent to Billy Gates? He?s a bloody devil , and still we reward him the a KBE (Knight of the British Empire , if he was British he would be a Sir). I have no problem with hardware makers, but commercial software makers such as Microsoft are in my eyes evil.

Brits don?t really see how Microsoft are evil, and only has a 12% Firefox market share, unlike some other countries. Most Brits are very ignorant when it comes down with computers, not worrying about the 1 million pieces of spyware Spybot detected. They don?t see a problem with Microsoft. I try to open peoples eyes, and it often works.

I don?t mind shareware authors, because you generally only use it once anyway and they don?t make millions.

I think open-source developers should be encouraged, do you?

Also, I?ve just joined Flickr, the above photo is hotlinked from it. Feedburner subscribers will have the images going in by default.
