JoeAnderson.co.uk Supports Live8

Misc. — Joe Anderson @ 5:12 pm Thursday 30 June 2005

I know this is a little late, but the entire JoeAnderson.co.uk Network is supporting the Make Poverty History campaign.

Over 30,000 children die from diseases which could be cured in a pin-prick in the West. The conditions third world countries live in are awful, unimaginable, and I think it’s a very noble thing trying to stop it.

Anyway, Live8 is broadcasting on the BBC and AOL. This is in one day time (according to our beloved AOL!). I’m no AOL user, but I think it’s a pretty good portal, back to the matter. Tune into Live8 and if possible attend that march thingy in Edinburgh.

Goggle Loggle

Misc. — Joe Anderson @ 7:40 pm Wednesday 29 June 2005

Smart goggles that help swimmers log lengths have been designed by a UK engineering student.

BBC NEWS | Technology | Smart eyewear for keen swimmers

These goggles display the amount of lengths swam, and the time elapsed. Very clelver, and though swimming isn?t a hobby I see this as a good idea.

The inventer of these goggles, Ms Williams, said she had the idea due to her experiences as a lifeguard. Many swimmers rely on a wristwatch or clock to keep track of lap times but both change the way that people swim.

“If they have a watch on a lot of swimmers will move their left arm differently, just to see how fast they are going,” she said. “It’s wasting energy for them really.”

This is a really cool, and I think it will catch on. I wonder how long it is until pedometer glasses are invented.

The MIT Weblog Survey

Internet — Joe Anderson @ 7:58 am

I’ve just taken the MIT Weblog survey. It is aimed at weblog writers, and only takes about 10 minutes to do.

Take the MIT Weblog SurveyThe first thing it does is crawl your site for links, and it gives you five random ones and you have to say what they are about and why they’re on your site. It then asks questions like How long have you being blogging?, How many UVs does your blog have daily? then it aks about communications and then finally questions asking if you know certain people (doctors, lawyers, bricklayers)

I thought I would post this as I had a strange urge to post something.

Google Earth: A Mini Review

Software — Joe Anderson @ 6:19 pm Tuesday 28 June 2005

A Satellite Picture of IcelandGoogle Earth, which used to be called Keyhole, is now available freely.

Naturally a commercial version is available. The plus version has GPS Device and spreadsheet data import and better resolution, while the pro version has all plus features, better resolution, the ability to measure area and optional add-ons.

The plus version costs $20 every year, and plus version costs $400 a year (not worth it really). It can go anywhere in the world, I’m not to sure about the technical stuff behind it, it’s cool.Boston sandwich One of features is that it can measure distances, in miles, nautical miles, kilometers, meters, feet, yards, inches or whatever you want. This is clever.

Google Earth also has the locations of gas stations, pharmacies, shops, coffee shops, hotels, bars, banks, hostels, roads, schools, hospitals etc…

This is fantastic free software and I think it’s worth a download!

It’s quite challenging on your system though, so be sure you can handle it!

When Pingomatic’s Down…

Internet — Joe Anderson @ 8:36 pm Monday 27 June 2005

At long last I can ping loads of sites in a few seconds in a pretty design. For the last two days I’ve been (pathetically) manually pinging various sites until Vox Efx told be about this service called Blogomatic.

Blogomatic looks a little amateur but it is actually quite a good service. Unlike Pingomatic it uses your RSS addy instead of your homepage addy. It currently pings Feedster, Moreover, Yahoo!,Blogdigger, NewsIsFree, Blo.gs, Syndic8, Blogrolling , Technorati, Weblogs and Pubsub.

Even better, it’s automatic and polls your feed every hour or so. This takes away the thrill of manually pinging though.

I ask though why PingMeNow nor Pingomatic, both the biggest pingers on the net, are down/unreliable currently.

I would appreciate your comments.
